Description

Thinking about taking a leave of absence or withdrawing from your program and want to know how it affects your finances? This guide was written in simple language, as if we were talking to you on the phone, to make sure everything is easy to understand. Below, you'll find the rules and financial examples for each situation: leave of absence (LOA/PLOA), withdrawal, and reentry after withdrawal.

✅ Step-by-Step Instructions

Leave of Absence (LOA and PLOA)

Step 1: What are LOA and PLOA?

  • LOA: leave of absence for health reasons, up to 120 days. Available to students who have completed at least 2 courses.
  • PLOA: leave of absence for personal reasons, up to 90 days. Also available to students who have completed at least 2 courses.
  • The student must return before the deadline ends, to avoid being dismissed from the institution.
  • The request must be made through the form: Request LOA/PLOA

Step 2: How does the financial side of a leave of absence work?

No financial or academic pending issues

If the request is made during the first week of a course and the student owes no tuition and hasn't failed any course:

  • No charge will apply at the time of the leave of absence.
  • Upon return, the student will resume paying only the installments due from the return date onward — nothing retroactive.

With financial pending issues

If, at the time of the request, the student already owed a tuition installment, that installment must be paid before returning.

Example: the student requested a leave of absence in March but owed the January and February installments. To return, they must pay January and February.

With failed courses

If, at the time of the request, the student has failed courses:

  • The Academic Office will automatically reschedule those courses for when the student returns.
  • The Bursar's Office will add up the total value of the failed courses and spread that amount across the new payment plan.
  • The student must sign a new Payment Form with the updated amounts (tuition + failed courses).
  • Return is only authorized after signing the new Payment Form.

Step 3: Do I need to pay tuition during my leave of absence?

Tuition installments corresponding to the leave period are not considered overdue debts. In other words, during the leave of absence, paying current installments is optional — it's up to the student.

Step 4: What happens if I take a leave of absence while a course is already underway?

If the leave of absence request is made while a course is already underway (from week 2 onward), the charge will be calculated based on the Refund Calculation table, available on page 60 of the official catalog.

Withdrawal

This is a permanent cancellation of the program, different from a temporary leave of absence (LOA/PLOA).

Step 5: How do I request a withdrawal?

Step 6: How is the charge calculated upon withdrawal?

  • There is no withdrawal fee.
  • You will need to pay for the courses you completed — not the value of the installments already paid.
  • Important: a tuition installment does not correspond to the value of a course.

Example: if you completed 3 courses and paid 3 installments, that doesn't mean you're all paid up. When requesting withdrawal, you will be charged the remaining amount for the 3 courses completed.

If the withdrawal is requested while a course is underway (from week 2 onward), the charge will also follow the Refund Calculation table, available on page 60 of the official catalog.

Step 7: How do I find out the cost of a course?

Divide the total value of your plan by the total number of credits in the program to get the cost per credit, then multiply by the number of credits for the course.

Example: for a plan of 24 x $2,000 ($48,000) for 36 credits, each credit costs $1,333.33. So, a 3-credit course would cost $4,000.00.

Step 8: How do I pay the outstanding balance after withdrawal?

  • PIX, boleto, or card (in full or in installments); or
  • Continue making monthly payments until the outstanding balance is paid off.

All payments must be made through the Student Portal.

Reentry after Withdrawal

Step 9: How do I request Reentry?

  • The request must be made through the form: Request Reentry
  • The Academic Office will prepare a new study plan based on previously earned credits and the current course schedule.

Step 10: How does the financial review of the return work?

The Reentry financial review takes into account:

  • The total amount of installments that were outstanding when the student was dismissed, if any.
  • The Reentry fee ($550) — a fixed, non-refundable amount.
  • The total value of any failed course(s), if applicable, spread across the new payment plan.
  • The exchange rate and fees in effect in the current catalog (2026).

To complete the return, the student must:

  • Carefully review the financial breakdown sent by the Bursar's Office.
  • Pay the Reentry fee.
  • Sign the new contracts.

All instructions to complete this process are sent by the Student Support team via email, including tutorials and detailed information about each step of the return.

Common Issues and Solutions

Issue

Solution

I don't know if I can request LOA or PLOA

Check that you have completed at least 2 courses. If in doubt, consult the Academic Office before submitting the request.

I don't know how much I need to pay to return from my leave of absence

Send an email to the Bursar's Office (bursar@mustedu.freshdesk.com) with your student ID to receive a breakdown.

I requested a leave of absence/withdrawal in the middle of a course and don't know the amount charged

The charge follows the Refund Calculation table, available on page 60 of the official catalog. Request a breakdown from the Bursar's Office if needed.

I don't know the cost of a specific course in my program

Divide the total value of your plan by the total number of credits in the program to find the cost per credit, then multiply by the credits of the desired course.

I missed the return deadline for my LOA/PLOA

Contact Student Support as soon as possible — after the deadline, you may be dismissed from the institution and will need to request Reentry.
