Financial Questions about Leave of Absence, Withdrawal, and Reentry

Modified on Tue, 22 Sep at 4:21 PM

Quick answer

A leave of absence (LOA, for health reasons, up to 120 days, or PLOA, for personal reasons, up to 90 days) does not generate a charge if requested in time. A withdrawal charges you for the courses you already took, not for the tuition installments you already paid. Reentry after a withdrawal has a fixed, non-refundable fee.

Before you start

  • You can only request a LOA or PLOA if you have already completed at least 2 courses.
  • Withdrawal is permanent. It is different from a leave of absence (LOA/PLOA), which is a temporary break.
  • If you are going to ask the Bursar's office for a financial breakdown, have your student ID ready.

How it works

MUST University treats three situations differently: a temporary leave of absence (LOA or PLOA), a permanent withdrawal, and returning after a withdrawal (Reentry). Each one follows its own financial logic, summarized below.

ProcessWhat it isDurationCharges
LOALeave of absence for health reasonsUp to 120 daysNo fee of its own; depends on any pending balance and failed courses
PLOALeave of absence for personal reasonsUp to 90 daysNo fee of its own; depends on any pending balance and failed courses
WithdrawalPermanent cancellation of the programNot applicableNo withdrawal fee; you are charged for the courses you took
ReentryReturning after a withdrawalNot applicableFixed, non-refundable fee of R$550, plus any pending balance and failed courses

Step by step

Leave of absence (LOA or PLOA)

  1. Submit your request through the Request LOA/PLOA form, stating the reason for your leave (health for LOA, personal for PLOA).
  2. If you request it within the first week of a course, have no overdue tuition, and have not failed any course, there is no charge at the time of the leave. When you return, you go back to paying only the installments from your return date onward, with nothing charged retroactively.
  3. If you have an overdue tuition installment at the time of the request, it must be paid before you return. For example: a student who requests a leave in March while owing January and February must settle both installments to be able to return.
  4. If you have a failed course, the Academic Coordination automatically reschedules it for your return, and the Bursar's office spreads its total value into your new payment plan. You sign a new Payment Form with the updated amounts (tuition plus failed courses); your return is only released after that signature.
  5. Return before the end of your LOA or PLOA period (see the deadlines under Deadlines and rules).

Withdrawal

  1. Submit your request through the Request Withdrawal form, indicating that you want to permanently withdraw from the program.
  2. There is no withdrawal fee, but you pay for the courses you already took, not for the tuition installments you already paid. Since an installment and a course do not have the same value, having paid a certain number of installments does not mean you are paid up for the same number of courses. For example: a student who took 3 courses and paid 3 installments may still owe a balance for those 3 courses.
  3. To find out how much a course is worth, divide the total value of your plan by the total credits in your program to get the value per credit, then multiply that by the course's credits. For example: on a plan of 24 installments of R$2,000 (a total of R$48,000) for 36 credits, each credit costs R$1,333.33; a 3-credit course would cost R$4,000.00.
  4. Pay the outstanding balance through the Student Portal, by PIX, bank slip, or card (in full or in installments), or keep paying monthly until the balance is settled.

Returning after a withdrawal (Reentry)

  1. Submit your request through the Request Reentry form.
  2. The Academic Coordination builds a new study plan based on the credits you had already earned and the current course schedule.
  3. The Bursar's office calculates your return amount by adding: any tuition that was still pending when you were dismissed, the fixed Reentry fee, and the value of any failed courses spread into your new payment plan, all based on the exchange rate and fees in the current catalog.
  4. Carefully review the financial breakdown sent by the Bursar's office, pay the Reentry fee, and sign the new agreements. Full instructions to complete the process, including tutorials, are sent by email from the Student Support team.

Deadlines and rules

  • You must return from your LOA (up to 120 days) or PLOA (up to 90 days) before the deadline. If the deadline passes without a return, you are dismissed from the Institution and will need to request Reentry to come back.
  • During a leave of absence, paying the tuition installments due in that period is optional: they are not considered overdue while you are on leave.
  • If a leave of absence or withdrawal is requested while a course is already underway (from the 2nd week onward), the amount charged follows the Refund Calculation table, available on page 60 of the official catalog.

Frequently asked questions

Can I request a LOA or PLOA if I haven't taken any courses yet?

No. You must have completed at least 2 courses. If you are not sure, check with the Academic Coordination before opening the request.

How do I find out how much I need to pay to return from my leave of absence?

Email the Bursar's office (bursar@mustedu.freshdesk.com) with your student ID to receive the full breakdown.

I requested a leave of absence or withdrawal in the middle of a course. How do I know how much I'll be charged?

The charge follows the Refund Calculation table, available on page 60 of the official catalog. If you'd like, you can also request the breakdown from the Bursar's office at the email above.

How do I know the value of a specific course in my program?

Divide the total value of your plan by the total credits in your program to find the value per credit, then multiply by the credits of the course you want (see the example under Step by step).

I missed the return deadline for my LOA/PLOA. What do I do?

Contact Student Support as soon as possible. After the deadline, you may be dismissed from the Institution and will need to request Reentry to return.
